Designed by the famous design company Charlap Hyman & Herrero, this Miami home host many gatherings and social events. Representing a reprieve from the city’s white-box galleries and sleek hotels, Nina Johnson wanted a special place, to entertain people, and what could be better than to have a playful, colorful, and art-filled home?

It’s a way to show people that artwork is actually livable. We have a big hairy dog that drools on everything. We have two little boys that run wild through the house. Objects are enhanced by the lives lived around them.

The couple met at Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and returned to the gallerist native Miami in 2005. In 2007, she opened her own art space (then called Gallery Diet) in Wynwood, which later was relocated to her current compound of buildings in Little Haiti. Emerging voices like Emmett Moore, Katie Stout, and Germane Barnes, mixed with predecessors such as Peter Shire, Nicola L., and the Florida Highwaymen, compose and shape her eclectic and intuitive program.

They moved into their 1920s Craftsman home in 2013, which had lots of space, as Milewski needed a music studio. The Restoring process was slow, starting by fixing the windows, and painted the exterior an avocado green, and uncovered the living room’s original ceiling mural, previously painted over.

A retro sectional curves around a coffee table by Emmett Moore. The walls are covered with Milewski’s vintage guitar collection and work by Ann Craven, John Martin, Phong Bui, and Charley Friedman.

Between the renovation, family friends, and guests left their own mark as well. Jim Drain conjured the entry’s new ceiling mural, inspired by the patchwork textiles of Florida’s indigenous Miccosukee people, while Stout, fresh out of RISD, personally delivered and installed a chandelier after the first one she shipped arrived shattered.

The chandelier in the boys’ playroom was custom made for them by Emmett Moore; the table and sofa were built by Milewski; and the curtains are by Katie Stout.

Johnson and Milewski worked with Cuban Tropical Tile to create a custom pattern that imitates a bathroom floor in Ernest Hemingway’s Key West home.

In Johnson-Milewski’s Miami Home nothing is considered too precious. Right next to blue-chip works of art and design are the inventions and creations of two boys, Cy and Lee. There are also the moons they created out of Play-Doh with the painter Ann Craven and portrait silhouettes they made from a wire at a summer art camp at Moore’s studio.

Art is just part of their life every single day. The same as it is for us, maybe even more
