The Silhouette chair is part of the LINLEY’s Extraordinary Furniture Collection 2014 – launched at Masterpiece London, making part of the art furniture collection.
LINLEY, taking inspiration from a traditional wing back chair and the creations designed by the Danish genius Hans Wegner, have created The Silhouette Chair. Organic and functional, it is strikingly crafted from a single copper panel, which has been individually rolled and hammered.
This age-old technique, used by coachbuilders in the restoration and customisation of classic cars, enables the craftsman to form compound curves from a flat sheet. This highly skilled and labour intensive production method ensures a flowing and ergonomic silhouette that fits seamlessly with the form of the human body.
The engineered sheet of copper is then clad on one face with neoprene, and finished with a luxuriously soft aniline leather, which is seamlessly wrapped around the rolled copper edge ensuring that the fluid lines of the chair’s silhouette continue. The front legs of the hand-shaped walnut frame flow up into the arms of the chair before sweeping around the back of the copper panel. Meanwhile subtle engineered fixings allow the copper panel to visually hover over the frame.
Conceived as a tribute to the master Danish craftsman, this modern lounge chair wears its construction lightly, the copper-backed seat appearing to float within its elegant American walnut frame – just like one of Wegner’s iconic designs. Finely crafted in three different workshops over a 600-hour period, it marries age-old techniques with innovative materials. The seat is formed from a single sheet of copper, hand-rolled and hammered into shape by panel-beaters before being clad on the upper side with neoprene and finished with super soft aniline leather.
