Matias Liimatainen is a sculptor and designer graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in ceramics and glass design. Recently he has been creating figurative pieces combining art and design fluently. Some of them contain kinetic elements, or function as light fixtures.
Sculpting has become a tool to express thoughts for Matias. As a material he uses porcelain due to its versatility and the subtle/ harsh changes to its character depending on the way it is being used.
He believes that works of art are somehow always self-portraits of the artist: after all, they are reflections of experience. This does not, however, mean that it is impossible to express the world truthfully. He receives something substantial from the surrounding reality, and transforminga it into a visual form, open for interpretation by the audience.
Lately, he has been working on figurative sculptures made from porcelain, also attaching to them elements made from various other materials, such as electronics. For the artist it is amusing to note how everyday objects that we usually see as banal, come to life when you build a carefully designed combination of materials – a sculpture.
