The sunshine of Miami and a swirl of attendant events have made the fair attractive to a broad, non-art-world audience, too. At the very least, it’s an overwhelming feast for the eyes and senses for visitors that can migrate over to the many satellite fairs, parties, panels, screenings and hybrid happenings. This is the place to see the top curators and collectors.
At Sean Kelly Gallery you could see works by Los Carpinteros, Antony Gormley, Hugo McCloud, Alec Soth and so others. Many are Cuban-born artists who split their time between Havana and Madrid.
For the buyers and sellers of ambitious paintings, sculptures and installations, it remains a prime venue for brokering major transactions.
The Gallery, founded by British-born Sean Kelly in 1991, operated privately in SoHo until 1995. During these formative years, it established a reputation for diverse, intellectually driven, unconventional exhibitions. The original list of artists represented included Marina Abramović, Joseph Kosuth and Julião Sarmento, who exemplify the Gallery’s commitment to exhibiting important, challenging contemporary art.
This was one of the most interesting galleries to visit.
