W Magazine’s annual The Movie Issue is out with the year’s 39 biggest stars bring back legendary screen roles and into peculiar characters for Tim Walker camera.
The photographer Tim Walker said to be influenced to this shoot by the colorful, bright Los Angeles paintings and photographs of David Hockney, as well as the ’70s free-love aesthetic that informs the artist’s work.
Walker transformed the 39 actors in ridiculousness and HIGH ART personas. The characters have this mix of Tim Burton and Stanley Kubrick’s universe. Lisa Frank was asked to produced this photo shoot using props from Pee-wee’s Playhouse and clothes from old Sassy Magazine shoots.
This combination of severely limited female roles and overwhelmingly serious film biographies may have contributed to the sense of abandon that seemed to possess the 39 actors and actresses chosen for this portfolio. The photographer Tim Walker was influenced by the colorful, sun-drenched Los Angeles paintings and photographs of David Hockney, as well as the ’70s free-love aesthetic that informs the artist’s work.
