Ai Weiwei‘s first ever exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil is his largest ever staged, entitled of RAIZ, the Portuguese word for root. Weiwei‘s art exhibition will be at the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo, until January 20th, 2019. This is a work that dives into Brazil’s tradition. The art exhibition will be open to the general public at the OCA in Ibirapuera Park, São Paulo.
Covering a total area of 8,000 square meters, Ai Weiwei‘s immersion into the Brazilian culture relied on the help of the Brazilian designer Paula Dib, who introduced the artist to the culture and its regional natural resources which he wasn’t familiar with until then. This “partnership” resulted in new works made of wood, seeds, roots, fabrics, and leather which ended up becoming a big Brazilian influenced artistic creation with great creativity.

His most well-known works count with his large-scale crazy art that presents a strain between the contemporary art world and the traditional Chinese ways of thinking. An example of this, is his 1995 ‘Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn,’ which will also be presented at this art exhibition. This work portrays Ai Weiwei intentionally dropping a million dollar vase, which caused a lot of controversies because of its history. The contemporary artist loves to court controversy so this was the perfect act of it.
